“Message from Neil Berkett CEO Virgin media
Dear all,
At our third quarter results earlier this month I talked about the need to exploit our cable network and ensure our broadband proposition is genuinely different from our competitors’. Today we’ve taken a big step forward with the announcement that we’ll launch a 50 megabit per second broadband product in 2008. This is more than twice as fast as the quickest service on the market today.
Howard Watson, our Chief Technology & Information Officer, made the announcement earlier today at a next generation broadband summit that’s been held by the government. The meeting brought together key figures in the telecoms industry to discuss what our consumers will want in the future, and what’s needed to ensure we can meet that demand.
In this age of information sharing and knowledge, telecoms lie at the heart, underpinning everything we do. Broadband has already transformed the world of entertainment and communications but we’ve really only scratched the surface of what’s possible. In the future, it’s going to be a key technology that will enable innovation, growth and wealth. Our cable network has a unique potential to revolutionise consumers’ experience and 2008 is the moment to take the lead with the commercial launch of a 50 megabit product.
We have a lot to do in 2008, but I know that with your enthusiasm Virgin Media can be a truly great company. I look forward to updating you about this when we launch next year.
Best Regards
Hi I found this on a web site
Virgin is working on its new PVR and it is estimated that the new Virgin V+ box could be released during the second half of this year.
Work is at a relatively early stage and it is not anticipated to be launched in the near future.
Virgin has confirmed that it has begun piloting new software on existing V+ boxes. The new code aims to fix several bugs including sound drop-outs and recordings ending early. It is also expected to re-enable the VCR SCART outputs when the box is in HDMI mode.
Virgin plans to send the new software to PVRs in several areas shortly, after which it will be distributed nationally.

Hi
Euro 2008 is been shown in HD for the very first time on the BBC HD channel and also on ITV HD for freesat users only.
I have been watching it on the BBC HD channel but there is major problems with the sound.
There best way to describe it sounds like a “high pitch squeaky noise”.
All the SD channels have their normal sound so does the BBC HD when Euro 2008 is not on. HD recordings I made previsouly are also fine.
I have made all sorts of alterations with sound settings on my TV but with no results.
I have Samsung LCD LE40R87BD. I do not use external speakers.
Have you guys experienced this problem?
Is this a brodcast problem?
Is there anyway it can’t be fixed?
Thanks for your help in advance
The BBC has published it’s BBC HD schedules for the first week of Euro 2008. Details here.
Good to see that Wild China in HD is unaffected, but the BBC 3 simulcast of Heroes is missing

Sorry if this has been posted else where.
Received an email from VM today listing the things delivered in 2007 and promising more to come in 2008 – So this year’s pledge is quite simple: in 2008, we promise to bring you even more surprises, fun and excitement.
What do you think they will deliver this year and how does that tie in with what you would like?
I think they are likely to deliver:
Mid range bundles in between the current 3 for £30 and VIP packs as already rumoured
More of the same in terms of penny movies etc
50M Broadband as promised
Single bills for all customers (hurrah!)
The BBC iPlayer
Better organisation and usability of VOD, hopefully organised along thhe lines of the iPlayer demos previosly linked to on this board
Yet more VOD content including significantly more HD content
Increased capacilty through the announced closure of the analogue system and the rumoured spring headend activity
I would like:
A PVR with a larger hdd or an external add on to the V+ box
More flexibility in the packages such as the option of swapping the Sky Movies channels for a number of VOD movies or swapping Sky’s movies and sport channels for the Asian bundle for example. Another option could be dropping the sports or movies in favour of a second V+ box.
A vastly improved customer service experience with either the closure of the indian call centre or a major training programme so they know their products
The reintroduction of the Sky basics channels – not that I watched them much but it would save us all having to endure the endless threads on here about them (Sorry!)
The following footer to the email was intersting – Virgin Media is the new name for NTL, Telewest and Virgin.net. - no mention of Virgin Mobile. Any significance?
