My Solution To The Encryption Problem… Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Hi Everybody!
I know this has been talked about a lot on here recently, how to have Pay TV on DTT when theres no secure encryption method available. Well, here’s my little theory:

The service would work on a Pay-Per-View basis.
As most STBs available have a MODEM in them, or at least have a ‘Serial’ port that you could attach one to, they could have a special premium rate number that the STB dials up to and downloads an ‘Encryption Key’ for whatever event/film the viewer chooses. The rate for this number would be set at whatever the cost of films would be such as £3.00 or whatever and as it is billed directly to the viewers ‘phone bill there would be no need for a subscriber database etc.
Also, as the ‘Encryption Key’ is only valid for that film and a different one is used every time, technically it should be unbreakable.

Any comments welcome

Do the new STB’s have encryption card slots? Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

As I continue to use my old ONDigital Pioneer box to view Freeview I was wondering if any of the people who have bought an new STB since the launch of Freeview could tell me if the box has one or more encryption card slots? If so . . . why?

Possible solution to the encryption problems Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

We all know that a major factor in the downfall of ITV DIGITAL was that the encryption was cracked and a large number of people were receiving the programmes with counterfeit cards.

However, surely there is some stupidity from ITVD themselves here. If they had collected ALL the boxes after subscription had ended then people could not have done this.

If I was going to use a counterfeit card, I would cancel my subscription, and use the cheap card. However, if ITVD had taken my box off me when I cancelled, this would not have been possible.

So there could be a possible solution without the need of a new encryption system for Freeview.

Provided ALL (or most) of the exITVD boxes were recalled (possible perhaps using credit card records etc) then the old encryption system would still be of use. Just so long as the boxes were recalled as soon as the subscription ended then there would be no piracy issues.

So it’s not all bad. They just need to recall all those thousands of boxes…

ITV Digital Are Changing Their Encryption (At Long Last) Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Details for ITV Digital’s Seca 2 rollout have this week been announced! According to an official press release, the digital terrestrial provider will issue its new Seca 2 viewing cards throughout April, and will then switch-over to Seca 2 encryption in early May.

The news will undoubtedly come as a shock to the many thousands of unofficial ITV Digital viewers who will lose access to the service once the new Seca 2 encryption system is introduced.

ITV Digital, on the other hand, must surely be hoping that its introduction of Seca 2 will force a high percentage of unofficial viewers to take out paid-for access, bringing a much needed cash-injection to what believe is a company on the brink of closure.

Wireless encryption Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Hi guys,

Is there a Dummys Guide to locking your Wi Fi anywhere?

I just want to password protect my Wi Fi so that only the laptops/xbox in my house access it.
In the past I havent bothered with it because we live in a small culdesac with old people around us but lately a teenage daughter of one of the new neighbours has started to use our connection and so i want to password protect it so she doesnt start downloading stuff she shouldnt on my VM connection…….

So how do i do it? Cos I cant find any help on VM website about doing it, which is ironic seeing as how quick they are to jump on you for doing the wrong things on their broadband and tell you everywhere that you should do it!

Thanks xx

When are ntl going to move to Nagravision 2 encryption? Virgin Media TV and Phone

Friday, February 20th, 2009

When are ntl going to move to Nagravision 2 encryption?

I assume they will have to send out new viewing cards, which would cost, but I would think it is well worth doing to make their system more secure.

Actually, maybe the set top boxes can’t take Nagravision 2? So ntl are stuck?

Thanks in advance and have a good new year.

Cable Encryption vs. Sky Encryption Virgin Media TV and Phone

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Note this thread is NOT for discussing how to take cable services without paying for them, same goes for sky.

What it is, is a question about the quality of the tv companies encyrption. we have seen many threads on here and probably heard about it too about things like STBs, plugging TVs in to steal tv. It seems sadly endemic. This seems relatively unheard of on Sky. Why is this? Is it because Sky has a stronger encryption key, better method? If so why can’t we have something like this so less people steal, more people pay, we all get charged less or get more for our money.

Many people believe VOD will stop the stealing of TV due to the activation of the return path. But I think this might not happen since TVs can’t be detected really, STBs that have this sort of stuff usually block a return path so cannot be seen. This may flag them up but not in homes with more than one stb where one could be real and the other…other. If VOD does definitely stop it all then good but if not shouldn’t cable impose more rigorous methods of protection to severely cut down on this.

Note to mods: I don’t believe this subject contravenes the forum rules, thread being about encouraging better cable encryption. However, if it does, I apologise.
