Government funding to replace licence fee? Broadcasting

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Not sure if this has been debated before, but I was thinking if it is possible to use tax revenue to fund the BBC, instead of collecting licence fee. The main advantage is there should be a lot of saving in administration – detecting licence fee dodgers, collecting, advertising, etc.

Some people might say it’s not fair for those who don’t watch TV, but a lot of people these days don’t watch the BBC with their TVs. So licence fee system is not exactly an “user-paying system” anyway.

Another advantage is that it ensures BBC is run the way the public wants, as it has to rely on funding from government.

What do you think?

C4 – Funding Gap Broadcasting

Friday, February 20th, 2009

I posted a topic on this the other day and was just looking for some clarification.Ive looked in depth at the problems channel 4 is facing in the next few years with the switchover and whether they can continue to provide psb etc.Im confused by a couple of things though. The first being what the major problem is for channel four. Is it that there will be more channels competing for advertising revenue, thus meaning their profits fall or is it the fact that other channels will be providing public service broadcasting and competing with channel 4 that way?

Also, why when the switchover comes will they be struggling to be able to afford to produce as much public service programming and require public funding for the first time, even though they can now. Is this again all to do with advertising or is it to do with the funding model that is in place?

Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yet another BBC funding thread… Broadcasting

Does this represent the first ’serious’ proposal by a major political party to redistribute the licence fee, if only a bit?

Interesting proposal for a closer link between BBCWorldwide and C4…

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008…8/bbc.channel4

Quote:

Channel 4 could be given a stake in the BBC’s commercial arm and launch a series of joint ventures with public bodies under radical plans being considered to plug a £100m funding gap. The Guardian has learned that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is examining a proposal for Channel 4 and the BBC to work more closely together.

Under the plan Channel 4 would receive a stake in the BBC’s commercial arm, which sells its programmes and channels globally and is expanding aggressively around the world.

Channel 4, which endured a tumultuous 2007 with its remit and purpose under scrutiny and is preparing a new vision to secure its future, would receive a cut of BBC Worldwide’s profits.

PSB Funding in the future Broadcasting

Looks like top-slicing is the preferred candidate, atm?

BBC Funding – still value for money? Broadcasting

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Whilst I am prepared to admit that the bbc is not all bad I feel that there is limited place in the current and future broadcasting arena for a publicly funded broadcaster, especially when that broadcaster uses the TVL fee to fund “further activities” e.g. iplayer & website etc. Would everyone get better value for money from the tvl fee if the bbc focused on making TV (& Radio) programmes, which they have done successfully for many decades, rather than the diversification of its services…..
