Damm, I’ve just lost ITV1, ITV2, C4 & Five Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The landlord has split our aerial so that it can feed another TV in the house and its weakened my signal, resulting in the loss of ITV1, ITV2, C4 and Five. I’m assuming I still get everything else because the 16QAM signal is stronger than the 64QAM one. All I get on the likes of ITV is the red dot . Any simply suggestions on how to boast the signal? Are there any gadgets/adapters I can buy to use internally, as opposed to the likes of a boaster attached to the aerial on the roof?

Ive just got my Pace box Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The thing that im concerned about is that:

A) I cant use BBCi. It says it is unavailable even though on the Pace site it says it can be used.

B) Can i turn the box off and then watch analogue, (so i can use teletext etc) like you can with Sky.

Cheers.

I’ve achived the impossible Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I got a Pioneer ex-ITV digital set top box today (UKP70odd) from Dixons and took it home, expecting it not to work.

This is the setup leading to the box
Aerial -> 20m of shitty cable -> Sky Digibox -> VCR -> Signal Booster -> 25m coax -> Signal Booster -> VCR -> Signal Booster -> ITV Digital box

and it found all channels except multiplex A (Channel 5).
I go and turn the Sky Digibox off and they come in too (A on 68 i think and Sky on 69 – will have to fix tommorrow), all the channels are fine – a hairdryer, the imersion and flicking the light switch (all of which screw the analougue picture) have not affected the ITV-Digital box in anyway – am I just lucky or is this typical?

The box is a Silver Pionner with the ITV Digital logo printed on the front of it – it’s as slow as a tortoise in superglue but the picture is excellent

Now i just have to wait for the full line up to start. At last i can watch Channel 5 (well once i’ve changed the Sky Digibox RF output).

BTW is there anyway of turing the ITV Digital boxes RF output off?

I’ve got 75 channels right now on DTT Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Noticed some funny goings on earlier with analogue TV so I decided to see what else my DTT box could find. It’s found 75 channels in total – though a lot are what I like to call “monkey” channels (ie there really text services).

Basically I’m getting signals from both Hannington (my usual and Croydon/Crystal Palace). This is obviously to do with atmospherics and isn’t going to last long. I’m getting amazing signals – on the signal strength screen the London muxes are coming in stronger than the Hannington ones ever do (the London ones are over four – in green – and nearly reaching the max, Hannington never goes past three).

Now here’s the thing, I’m about 50 miles from London with a fair few tall buildings in the way. Whereas I’m only about 5 miles from Hannington with almost no buildings at all in the way. I’m also only using an indoor aerial as I live o close to my local transmitter (and also due to the newly installed communal one not gettng the BBC mux!)

I’ve seen cable Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I got my first sighting of digital cable TV yesterday when I visited my aunt. She subscribes to Telewest Active Digital. All I can say is I’m glad I opted for ONdigital (and would have been equally glad had I opted for Sky digital). Compared with the picture I receive from my local transmitter, the Telewest one is lacking in sharpness, brilliance, contrast and the colours are utterly dull. Her TV is a brand new Panasonic (a brand not exactly renowned for producing a poor picture). On top of that the on-screen guide makes ONd’s ‘Now and Next’ facility seem a mine of valuable information. With cable delaying its digital launch so long after the satellite/terrestrial launches, I had thought that they would be able to capitalise on Sky’s and ONd’s teething troubles. Not in the least. ONd have nothing to fear from these people.

I’ve got the new games ! Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I’m glad to say I now have pingoo and the treasure hunt game (or minesweep as it’s called on the PC). Both of our boxes are picking up the games (phillips and pace).
The green bar now just says loading, and the ondigital logo that wizz’s accross the screen in now black (Oooooo). What does everyone else think to the games? I was a bit disappointed that pingoo only has 4 levels.

wondering if i’ve been throttled? Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

just trying to download a copy of ubuntu ultimate via utorrent and cannot get off the little yellow triangle of death (i.e. – no open ports)

done nothing to the modem or anything like that, although i have re-formatted (again) this afternoon to use vista ultimate.

i noticed earlier this evening it went green as the port seemingly opened up, then closed again. happened a few times but it’s remained closed since – i’ve tried a few random ports to no effect.

i’ve tried accessing the control panel on the modem, but there’s no visible option to manually open any ports up.

i’ve got 43 seeds and around 85.5kb/s download speed (i’m on a 2mb connection BTW), and in the past, that many seeds has usually seen me get about 150kb/s and even as high as 200kb/s

now, the million dollar question .. i’m wondering if i’ve been throttled because i’ve downloaded at least 3 different linux distros (yes, really ) in the past 4 days so i’m probably looking at around 10gb worth of traffic at least – coupled with the various updates and bits and bobs when i installed each one.

although literally as I finish this post, i check back to utorrent and i have the green circle again .. for how long is anyone’s guess.

although looking at the clock, having just gone 1am .. it would certainly tally up with the possibility of me being put on some kind of restricted or “heavy user” plan as it’s essentially become unrestricted as it’s now passed 1am.

does any of this make sense to anyone ??

I’ve had enough Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I’m sick of being on YouTube and the videos stop downloading quickly and the videos are unwatchable!

I recently upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb to sort this problem only to find that it hasn’t. Looks like this fair usage crap kicking in again or something. Anyway i’ve had enough and am going to order Vodafone Mobile Broadband 7.2Mb and 4Mb upload speed for £15 per month.

Is anyone else fed up with Virgin?

“The worst ping time i’ve ever heard” Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

The exact words of Tech Support yesterday.
We’re of to Be Broadband because Virgin don’t have a fix time on UBR01 – Sheffield for over-utilisation until APRIL!

And these issues ONLY happen when we’re STM’d.

Here’s what we’re talking about:

www.bbc.net.uk ping statistics —
14 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 64% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 2767.735/2963.672/3092.973 ms
