Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I am trying to connect to a netgear wireless router.

My connection shows that have full strength signal but I do not seem to be able to connect to the internet. Do I need to download software?

Any suggestions welcome.

Netgear and VM support. I’m confused Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Got 50MB installed last week. Wireless-N Router WNR2000 arrived on Friday. I have been getting 1mb/s download speed since. I phoned VM this morning and the agent was very helpful. He ran all sorts of tests. and made me do a few including bypassing the router once again and just having PC to modem wired up directly. I was getting near enough full 50MB so he said it looks like a netgear issue and they don’t offer support and I’d have to phone them directly and ask them if they can look at my settings.

Then the nightmare begins….

The person on the phone from netgear after about 10 minutes of waiting while his systemr started up (national rate *sighs*) said their router was given to me by another ISP they don’t offer support on it. WTF?

Currently back on the phone to VM now.

Edit: VM said they’ve had a few calls like this were netgear don’t offer support. I was put on hold again and when he came back on he said he can’t transfer me directly because the main switchboard is down. He gave me a phone number for netgear but it’s the same number as last time and I’m not paying again to be probably told the same thing.

Saynoto0870 doesn’t work either. It gives you a free number to ring but the automated response is to phone the correct number because they don’t accept calls on that one.

Virgin Netgear router problems Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

For some reason over the past 48 hours or so, my router hasn’t been dynamically receiving its network/IP info as usual.

On the 192.168.1.1 page, it shows most of the results (IP Address, Subnet, etc) as 0.0.0.0

Does anyone know why this could be, or how this could be solved. I’ve tried umpteen options, including:connecting the laptop and modem directly via ethernet
transferring to alternernate combinations of modems and routers (I have several spares) – only one was able to connect, a Belkin, and temporarily too
restarting, resetting, etc, etc
calling the helpline – they didn’t explain much, or try to help much, but they think its a router fault, and are sending out a new one

We believe it may be a DNS fault and out of our control; not that Virgin would admit this or offer a refund.

And thoughts on this problem would be greatly appreciated

Virgin Netgear wireless WGR614V9 – Back to Netgear firmware Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

(Sorry posted in wrong forum can a mod delete this one. Cheers)

Hi there,

I have recently come by with a Virgin Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I was wondering how easy it would be to change the firmware on this back to the Netgear one. I know this is technically VMs property but its mine after 12 months. I dont want to be bogged down with the stupid virginmedia firmware they ship with as I want to convert it into an access point.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Netgear WRN 2000 Router Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Have recently upgraded to the so called 20 mg broadband using a Virgin supplied Scientific Atlanta modem. All installed and worked fine with my Belkin router enabling me to link up a laptop and Squeezebox wirelessly.

As I was getting no where near 20 mg was advised to update the router so this weekend I installed a new router (as above). All worked fine initially and then I came home to find the PC frozen. On reboot I had lost the connection on the Ethernet wired desktop and since this houses the Squeezebox software that wouldn’t connect but the laptop connected to the internet with no problem.

After much messing about turned everything off, left it a couple of hours and reinstalled the router again and the same thing happened IE worked fine then dropped the internet connection on the wired PC but connects on the laptop!

Any ideas – preferably ones that don’t involve ringing Virgin (although in fairness they were the very good when ringing about the MAC address on the new modem).

Netgear WGR614 Slow Download Speeds Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I’ve just installed the Netgear WGR614 Router and have suffered the same problems as loads of other user across the Net, my download speed of 10MB was halved when accessed wirelessly, sometimes dropping to 4MB, but showing 10MB when wired.
I’ve just installed this program TCP Optimizer on 2 Desktops & a Laptop and am now running all at full download speeds.

Connected.. but not connected (Liverpool / Netgear dg834n) Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Hi guys,
Is anyone else in the liverpool area having trouble connecting to Virgin via ADSL at the minute? My connection went down over a day and a half ago, and is still not back. A number of frustrating calls to the Indian support centre last night failed to solve the issue.

Basically, my modem/router (Netgear RangeMax DG834n) appears to connect (the Router Status config page says shows an upstream/downstream speed), but the connection status simply remains “LCP is allowed to come up”… it just sits there and never gets an IP.

I’ve tried rebooting the Netgear, as well as doing a factory reset, all to no avail. I have the latest firmware, and nothing has changed recently in my pc/network setup – went to bed one night with it working, got up the next and it didn’t.

Virgin tech support say they have tested my “line”, and found nothing, so think its a problem with my modem/router, but as It’s not one of their approved modems, won’t support it. Their suggestion is that I try plugging it in to someones elses phone line to see if it connects -i.e. To rule out a fault with my modem… but surely another phone line has to be adsl enabled, or can i really plug my Netgear in anywhere and expect it to connect??

My netgear has been running fine since i bought it in November last year, and it appears to be working correctly in every other respect – anyone else had problems with this model… Or are vm tech support fobbing me off??

Motorola SB4200 and Netgear WGR614v7 Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Any suggestions would be appreciated on the following issue.
I usually work on ADSL but attempting to setup Netgear WGR614v7 router on VM (old Telewest) cable line using Motorola SB4200 Surfboard Cable Modem for a friend.

Router works fine on my home network detecting a dynamically allocated IP details, but when connected to cable line via cable modem Router “asks” for STATIC IP details rather than detecting “Dynamic” ie ISP provided.
Manually entered the IP details from PC (ipconfig) that is normally connected to the modem but no access.

I would have thought ISP provided IP details should have been correct?

Anyone know how to get ‘Vista’ working with free wireless ‘Virgin’ NETGEAR router!!!! Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Anyone know how to get ‘Vista’ working with the free wireless ‘Virgin’ NETGEAR router!!!!

I am on Cable (not ADSL) 4Mbit service.

The NETGEAR wireless type is a WGR614.

On the Virgin website, they don’t mention that they support this router this router, as it is not in their list of wireless adapters that are covered by their technical suppot; but I don’t know if I this is a problem, as they have now shipped me two of these routers; when I initialy complained that I thought he first router might be faulty. When I had no joy with the second router (of the same model number), and I couldn’t get that going, then I assume their must be another problem.

I’ve tried using the Virgin ‘Wirelss Manager’ software that came on the CD that came with the router, and followed the instructions of that probably (30 times now), and I get all the way to the final screen; where it asks for a network name and password (8 characters), but then it fails to connect. (and suggest that I reset my router), and that doesn’t work either!!!!

I’ve tried phoning them a dozen times only to get liittle help, when talking to their technical help desk each time.

All I get is the usual, turn it off & on & try a whole host of other things that don’t work. I must b e getting their inept technical help desk each time!

Of curse I have the wireless switched on on my PC. Also, I can hook into the modem directly with an Ethernet cable and I have no problem, it is just when I try and connect via the wireless router that I have a problem. They have a suggestion on their website, that states that I shoud try and turn my PC off & then back on again, or disable the wireless connection & then enable them again; as a proposed solution to this very ‘known’ problem with ‘Vista’ (i.e. being able to connect by wire OK, but then having a problem when trying to connect wirelessly)

Given that I have had all these issues, and am still having a problem connecting, from time to time, I can actually ’see’ the ‘virginbroadband’ router/adapter when I search for wireless networks which to connect to (using my PC’s wireless manager, i.e. not Virgin’s software). The strange thing is though, one minute I can ’see’
the virginbroadband network, but then it disappears as quickly as it arrived, and appeared at random intervals after that also, but it seems to be gone for good now.

Still I can conect by wire(via the router), which allows me to send this question now. (i.e. modem connected to the Ethernet ‘internet port’ on the wireless router, and then another Ethernet connection from any one of the four numbered ports from the router to my laptop)

My laptop is a brand new Hp Pavilin DV9720ea, with built in wireless.

Can anybody help me please, as I’m going mad here…. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrggghhhhh !!! ;-)

Can anyone post idiot proof instructions for me to set up a secure connection on this router? The manuals I have read are gibberish. Many thanks
