The Hits Confirm wats happening with the playlist being so short! Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Today i contacted EMPA (the makers of The HITS) and asked them why their playlist was so short and their other channels wher very long!!
They said that the list will contonuie to be between 30-40 till about 6 months time, this is due to little adverts they say, i dont know why, they also said that there would be the same amount of adverts as their other channels.
The HITS then said that when the list does get longer it will not include New songs, they say that the HITS is aimed at classic songs and artists.

The HITS then whent on to inform me that they hopefully will be launching a new channel on Freeview only in the new year they say it will include new releases and will be aimed at teens.

The HITS has also confirmed that their channel has currently more viewers that TMF.

Signing and other short stories Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I was just wondering wht happened to all those wonderful new features that Digital TV was supposed to bring?

I have just read the replies to my post in the Onscreen signing thread http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/…?threadid=6215 and realised that we will probably never see most of the things that we being banded about when Digital TV was still a dream.

Take the OnScreen Signer, as was pointed out to me, it would probably require extra hardware, as well as extra bandwidth to be able to switch him/her on and off.

On a DVD, this would be very easy to achieve, a DVD movie can have an alternate video stream as well as multiple audio streams, therefore a signer could be placed on the second video stream, and/or audio description for the visually impared could be provided. I am not sure if this has been done but it has been possible from the outset.

In order to achieve the same with digital TV a new STB would probably be required, or at the very least an expansion card to go in STB, either would be prohibitively expensive and therefore are unlikeley to happen.

So far the only thing Digital TV seems to have given us is MORE channels. It seems to me that in the rush to get DTTV out, it was thrown together, without considering what maybe needed in the future.

Come up short again Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

From the content of some of the recent posts on this forum, it looks like we will only be getting ITN24 for a few hours in the morning.

Once again the DTT platform has proved that it just cannot cut it. While anyone with Cable or satelite will be able to watch 24/7 most of use will be asleep or on our way to work while ITN24 is on.

I know it is not any one company’s fault, each DTT broadcaster is trying to make the best use of its bandwidth.

I, personally, blame the ITC and the government. Unless they start looking into ways that they can increase the available bandwidth and so increase the number of channels, DTT will just get left behind.

We know that digital signals on adjacent frequencies do not interfere with each other, so why can’t the ITC find more frequencies to use? I am not interested in having 500 channels, jsut enough to allow a decent variety of content on the platform.

Other Short Channels Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

With the introduction of Adult Channel, TVX, Simply Money and TV Travel Shop does anyone know if Ondigital have any more plans to put other short channels onto the system when other channels are not in use. I think for late night viewing maybe a time-shifted (3 Hours) version of TNT might be good as this doesn’t last for very long anyway and it would mean that Ondigital has another channel. This could maybe take the place of Discovery Kids/Wings or another channel. Also Sky Sports 3 isn’t generally used in the week before 11 or 12 so could Ondigital put another channel on then?

Any views or comments will be appreciated

thanks

Broadband connection issues in EH49/W Lothian – short power cuts? Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Has anyone been having problems with the connection going down yesterday and today? that live in or around West Lothian, like me…(?)

Yesterday I tried to quickly check the internet at about 10:30am and it couldn’t connect, with everything switched on correctly. It only got fixed around 4:30pm when my dad got back home early to fix it so my mum could get online to write up a report for her work… I hadn’t tried resetting the router as in the past I’d been told that it might be at VMs end and resetting the router wouldn’t necessarily fix the problem.

Anyway resetting it did seem to work then and the same thing happened this morning, around 11am I tried to get online, it wasn’t working and so he switched all the equipment on and off and got it working again. We’ve had to put labels on all the plugs and make up notes for everyone so we know how to do that incase it happens again when my dads not around…

But the thing is, this never used to happen before. My dad reckons that there must have been some sort of short power cut that caused the connection to be lost, like when that happens the IP address gets lost and it cant retrieve it unless we switch the router etc. off and reboot it… I don’t mind doing that when it works but its an awkward thing to get right, switching the plugs on and off and leaving it some time, all in the right order etc.

Whats annoying is that, this never happened before a few months ago… since about May or so, its happened a good 4 or 5 times, so I can’t say im overly impressed… I said to my dad that it could be the hardware possibly, like how do we know that the problem that causes the loss of the connection is at VMs end but he seems to think it is at VMs end(?) anyway I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience recently… as soon as we reboot everything, it seems to work, so it appears to be that there was/is some kind of power cut or interuption of connection that caused it. We never had this problem before a few months ago, its pretty frustrating, esp. as it can be confusing how to reset everything in the right order so it all works again…

Has anyone who lives locally been having similar problems? my dad checked the status page on VMs site and it didn’t list any problems with our postcode but it did say there was a problem at a postcode thats maybe about 15 miles away, so we weren’t sure…

India OK, Engineers in short supply Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Well, I finally got round to some digging in the front garden…

You’ve guessed it – I put the fork through the VM cable. Fortunately, only the telephone side was hit, the broadband link survived.

Now the good news and the bad news:

- I got through to India promptly and could understand what the young lady was saying. Told her I’d skewered the cable and she DIDN’T BOTHER WITH THE REST OF THE SCRIPT! (good)

BUT their systems were “down”, so she couldn’t book an engineer (bad)

BUT she sympathised with my costs using my mobile and promised to call me back (maybe good but not a moment to start holding your breath).

Two hours later she DID call me back (very, very good. I thanked her for calling back – she seemed surprised.).

BUT the first available engineer appointment is 10 (TEN!) days away on 31st July (very bad)

AND it will cost me £25 ‘cos I’m a clumsy idjut (bad, but understandable…)

All in all, better than expected (much, much better than the water board, but that’s another story), but I wouldn’t want to be reliant for my livelihood on comm links that take 10 days to repair. Tomorrow morning would be nice.

Series Link – short recordings? V+ HD

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Been a V+ person for a few weeks now having moved from Sky. Still learning the system and like many I recorded all sorts of stuff – just because I can

Occasionally, I got the message advising of conflict, i.e. trying 3 things at the same time.

I got over that, and understood the reasons. I did a series link – again to see how it works. I linked Airport or Airline whatever it is called – you know the Easy Jet programme.

This is my problem/query. The programme is linked, it then shows less than half a programme – anything from 8-12 minutes then asks if I want to watch again. Sometimes the programme records fine, other times that happens – very frustrating. THere are no conflicting recordings and I know the programme isn’t running late, as the start of the recording shows the opening credits.

A few quick questions:

Is this normal?

Is it a quirk of the system (i.e. not perfect)?

Is it worth having to face Customer Service? – bear in mind it doesn’t happen ALL the time.

Am I doing anything wrong, will it help if I cancel the series link and reset it?

This was a major factor in my decision to switch.

Thanks all.

Heroes – Recordings ended short V+ HD

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

So, set Heroes to record series link and the box recorded both episodes, only 43 minutes long for each. The first one cut out early but the start of the second recording got the bits we missed. However the second half cut early and we’ve missed the ending.

Has anyone else found this?
