signing on hollyoaks omnibus ? Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I’ve had a panasonic tu-ct20 for a week now, a bit glitchy even though the signal level is at 9 from Crystal Palace,

however, I was watching the Hollyoaks omnibus on Ch4 this morning but had to switch over to analog as the superimposed women doing the signing for the deaf was very off putting.

I suppose this is Ch4 adding this rather than the box (although it seemed quite a sharp graphic compared to the background picture) ?

thanks,

Onscreen signing Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I recorded the programme “When Planes Go Down” which was on C5 last week through the OD box because it’s a much better picture than the normal C5 reception.

When I came to watch it there was a man permanently in the bottom right-hand corner using sign language to interpret what was said onscreen.

Is it possible to not have this facility switched on?

It was not shown on the normal C5 channel only through OD.

I didn’t have subtitles switched on.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Signing and other short stories Freeview

I was just wondering wht happened to all those wonderful new features that Digital TV was supposed to bring?

I have just read the replies to my post in the Onscreen signing thread http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/…?threadid=6215 and realised that we will probably never see most of the things that we being banded about when Digital TV was still a dream.

Take the OnScreen Signer, as was pointed out to me, it would probably require extra hardware, as well as extra bandwidth to be able to switch him/her on and off.

On a DVD, this would be very easy to achieve, a DVD movie can have an alternate video stream as well as multiple audio streams, therefore a signer could be placed on the second video stream, and/or audio description for the visually impared could be provided. I am not sure if this has been done but it has been possible from the outset.

In order to achieve the same with digital TV a new STB would probably be required, or at the very least an expansion card to go in STB, either would be prohibitively expensive and therefore are unlikeley to happen.

So far the only thing Digital TV seems to have given us is MORE channels. It seems to me that in the rush to get DTTV out, it was thrown together, without considering what maybe needed in the future.

Open Signing on C4 and C5 Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Why does C4 and C5 use open signing (The little man in corner of your screen for the benifit of the deaf) via Ondigital but not on analogue. What’s good for one should be good for the other. This will just turn people off going digital.

Signing Freeview

Does anyone else find the increasingly alarming trend of small people in the corner waving their hands about on most channels (even Cartoon Network) irritating? Don’t get me wrong I appreciate people with hearing loss find this service invaluable, the point I’m making is why can’t there be a way to switch this service on and of just like subtitles. It is now getting to the point where I find myself switching channels as soon as I see one of these people in the corner.

Signing for the hard of hearing Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I noticed that some programmes are using a person in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, signing for the hard of hearing.
I have no problem with this, however, I am not hard of hearing and I’m getting fed up being distracted by this.
Having spoken to OnDigital today they say there is no way of turning this off and that more and more programmes will be introducing it.
Now, as I say, I have not got a problem with catering for the hard of hearing but you would think that in this technological era OnDigital would be able to allow you to turn this annoying person off as you can with subtitles on anologue!!
Does anyone feel the same, or is it just me?
P.S. OnDigital say they have no control over this and it is something we will be seeing more of!!!

Channel 5 In-vision signing. Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I was just flicking through the channels and I noticed that on Channel 5’s “Urban Gothic” there was In-vision signing.
Nothing special? Well it wasn’t on Analogue Channel 5.
Is it possible that the signer was broadcast seperatly and the box merged him with the picture or is it (more likely) that Channel 5 only chose to broadcast the programme with signing digitally ?

Signing up online – how do I check order progress Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I signed up online to NTLs 2 for 20 quid service on Tuesday. Yes, I know, just before the Virgin changeover … probably not the best time to do so but I didn’t realise they were about to change branding the next day.

Anyway, I got a confirmation number and password but I haven’t heard anything back. Neither by email nor phone. I can’t find any way to check on their online site – am I missing a link somewhere or should I just try giving them a call and hope they can sort it that way? (Since I got a discount for applying online, I’m assuming that they won’t be in a hurry to do anything by phone).

Programme Signing Virgin Media TV and Phone

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Now this is something that really bugs me… Is there a way of removing the person sited in the corner of the screen signing various programmes?, I understand the need for this for hearing impaired people but its not what I want to see.. Both C4 and Five do this on a regular basis but I see no option on my STB to switch off this feature.
Switching to terrestrial is not an option because of the poor signal.
