I was just wondering wht happened to all those wonderful new features that Digital TV was supposed to bring?
I have just read the replies to my post in the Onscreen signing thread http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/…?threadid=6215 and realised that we will probably never see most of the things that we being banded about when Digital TV was still a dream.
Take the OnScreen Signer, as was pointed out to me, it would probably require extra hardware, as well as extra bandwidth to be able to switch him/her on and off.
On a DVD, this would be very easy to achieve, a DVD movie can have an alternate video stream as well as multiple audio streams, therefore a signer could be placed on the second video stream, and/or audio description for the visually impared could be provided. I am not sure if this has been done but it has been possible from the outset.
In order to achieve the same with digital TV a new STB would probably be required, or at the very least an expansion card to go in STB, either would be prohibitively expensive and therefore are unlikeley to happen.
So far the only thing Digital TV seems to have given us is MORE channels. It seems to me that in the rush to get DTTV out, it was thrown together, without considering what maybe needed in the future.
