I have a 2mb Virgin Broadband connection that runs into a Scientific Atlanta 2100 cable modem.
From there the internet gets sent to a Linksys BEFSR41 v4.2 router.
I have an old Dell Demention 4700 (windows xp sp2) on the network that i use to download torrents via Azureus (Vuze). Its not got a screen, mouse or keyboard – i connect to it via VNC Enterprise if i need to admin it. Otherwise it runs Windows Media Connect 3.0 and shares the media on it with the Xbox 360 in the lounge. The Dell deosn’t run all the time, but on the occasions it is downloading, the following options are set in the bittorrent client:
max upload speed: 25
max download speed: 300
Max upload slots: 3
Max connection per torrent: 80
Max connections globally: 134
I have 2 problems with my setup that im hoping someone can help me understand / overcome.
1) when the bittorrent client is running, internet access from other computers or games consoles around the house is very slow, or doesnt work at all.
2) When bittorrenting has been running all day and i turn it off to use xbox live, the connection is very bad and i invariably get thrown off the game. Also, the internet is very slow if ive been bittorrenting for a long period of time.
A sppedtest on my internet connection when its working properly shows an average download spped of 3000kbps download, and 300kbps upload. I thought that considering my Azureus options were so low in comparisson that it would be ok.
Do i need to turn down the settings to get bittorrent to stop killing my broadband connection?
If so, what settings should i have them at?
Also my main query: why when i turn the torrent system off alltogether does my connection remain terrible for many hours?
I can understand Xbox Live not working alongside bittorrent on my 2mb connection, but why after ive switched bittorrent off does it still run so slowly for serveral hours?
Hope someone can help with this as i know technically Virgin dont want their users running bittorrent anyway!
