Why don’t the government just step in?? Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Maybe I am just being a bit to simplistic, but if the government were to foot the £180 million bill to the FA, and therefore hold the TV rights, it could then show all matches in the clear and give the public a real reason to buy the new FTA boxes.

The FA would benefit – It gets its cash and the clubs are saved.

The public would benefit – Football matches in the clear.

ITV digital would benefit – it is saved from complete failiure and could continue without the sports element.

The Government would benefit – It would be seen to have saved both the FA and ITV digital and many jobs (perhaps a few votes there) and will aid the digital revolution.

The only fly in this ointment may be that some may kick up a fuss about taxpayers money being used (even though £180 million is a drop in the ocean in public finances). If that is the case then the money can come from the lottery commission. After all, it would be far cheaper than the dome.

Any thoughts?

One Step Back For NTL/Telewest Merger Virgin Media TV and Phone

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Shareholders in cable giant telewest could take legal action to block its planned £5.6billion merger with NTL if the company fails to gain sufficient value for its television subsidiary Flextech.

Sources close to the business claim that the dispute between NTL and Telewest over the value of Flextech and tis future within an enlarged group could lead to the deal being blocked if Telewest’s US shareholders are not satisfied with the outcome. The merger is now expected to be pushed back until late next month.

Flextech, a joint venture with the BBC, has been variously valued at between £450million and £1billion with NTL insisting on a firm value being decided before the merger talks take place. Flextech is the decond most valueable programme content business in digital televison after BSkyB.

Telewest has always indicated that it considers Flextech a vital part of its business but Simon Duffy (NTL Chief Exec) said recently that cable companies and televsion content businesses do not belong under the same roof.

A source said “If Telewest decides it is being forced by circumstances o sell Flextech to complete the merger, potential buyers will put in low bids and that is going to be very difficult to explain to shareholders. The threat of legal action is a real one”

NTL and Telewest are quoted on the NY stock exchange. Telewest might decide to float part of Flextech on the stock market instead as this would allow it to realise value while retaining control.

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Hi there

just noticed that the QVC Active service on TW has seen sense and now shows the current QVC programme in the top right hand corner instead of the Front Row trailers.

now i wonder who decided to ditch the dreaded Front Row ? QVC ? TW ? Maybe this is the start of common sense.

Door Step Cold Calling Virgin Media TV and Phone

Friday, February 20th, 2009

In the last four month I have had NTL on my door step three times with the line “I’m here to install your cable mate”.

Sorry I’m I missing something here, I have not got any recollection of making an appointment to have it in the first place.

Each time I am told that they can do “a special deal” if a sign up on the spot there and then.

Each time I point to my minidish and tell them that I’m happy with Sky/BT.

Dispite phoning then they simple will not leave me alone.

This does not include all the leaflets and Junk Mail I receive.

Go away ntl.

GMB Calls On Virgin Media To Step In To Row On Tax & NI Liability At Kelly Comms Cable

GMB Calls On Virgin Media To Step In To Row On Tax & NI Liability At Kelly Communications After Wages Were Paid As ‘Expenses’
GMB members employed by Kelly Communications to install Virgin Media TV want the employer to pay tax liabilities on wages paid as ‘expenses’ in dodgy wages scheme
19 Feb 2008

GMB members employed by Kelly Communications in depots across the UK installing Virgin Media TV have learned that they may face huge tax bills at the end of the financial year as a result of a payment scheme introduced by Kelly Communications whereby wages were paid as ‘expenses’ and not subject to tax and National Insurance. GMB has received advice that this payment scheme may not be proper and that tax and National Insurance may be levied on the ‘expenses’.

Under a scheme implemented by their employer, Kelly Communications, employees contracts have been subcontracted out to employment agencies, which have been paying employees wages in the form of expenses to save the company money. Kelly Communications told GMB members that the scheme was legal and was subject to a disclaimer by Her Majesty Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

When GMB investigated the matter it found that Kelly Communications employees were being required to sign expense declarations for up to a year in advance. They were also required to sign expenses forms for expenses that had not been incurred. With the backing of GMB, employees at the Kelly Communications depot in Bournemouth launched a successful challenge against the scheme. GMB members in Bournemouth have been offered the opportunity to return to work directly for the company. However, the company has failed to offer the same opportunity to staff at other sites including Woolwich, Havant, Southampton, Croydon and Bromley. Kelly Communications has attempted to bar GMB from gaining access to speak with its members across the country. In addition, the company has served notice to de-recognise GMB at it’s Brighton depot, in retaliation for GMB whistle blowing on the scheme and for the members working there refusal to join in the scheme.

Rob Macey, a spokesman for the GMB Commented, “GMB believe that Virgin Media has subcontracted out its responsibility for these employees. GMB members are the public face of Virgin Media. They drive Virgin Media branded vans, they wear Virgin Media uniforms, and they install Virgin Media equipment.

GMB is asking Virgin Media to become directly involved in this dispute about the proper payment of wages and National Insurance. Kelly Communications must pay any tax and National Insurance liabilities resulting from their payment scheme. This dodgy scheme must be withdrawn and the employees must be offered the opportunity to be direct employees of Kelly Communications.

Virgin Media should also ensure that GMB members employed by Kelly Communications have proper trade union rights and a fair deal for their work without resort to dodgy tax schemes as one would expect when working for such a respected brand.”

A Step Backwards Cable

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Hi all, this is my first post so if it is in the wrong place I apologise.

We have just upgraded from analogue to digital with VM, and realising that we cannot record one program whilst watching another on digital, spent an afternoon incorporating the analogue into the setup. Although this will only last until the analogue system is finally closed down. It struck me that the trend to go digital, ( and if all the other suppliers operate the same way ), is a step back to when there was only 1 channel to watch.

Or have I got it wrong and there is a way to watch one program whilst recording another ?
