Virgin Media’s On Demand is useless and never works 80% of the time! Virgin Media TV On Demand

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Anyone agree?

I always get some crappy error message Today’s is 1092, and when it does work it wants me to ring Virgin as it’s managed to lose the PIN!

In the error sheet it has error 165 “fail to get connection params” with STB IP unavailable and CA IPPV Status ‘unknown’ with card status ‘waiting’.

Prediction Time Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Before the launch, here are my predictions for the first two years of FreeView

1) The Government will insist all new TVs 28″ and above must have DTT tuners (a la US regulations being introduced)

2) FreeView, after a slow start, will be declared a success

3) DTT technology will improve to cover 90% of the country

4) QVC and TravelShop will be squeezed off the platform once DTT proves successful

5) The Turner channels will arrive in 2003, as will Eurosport and Carlton Cinema

6) E4 will require a new business model (making it FTA) or fold

7) Sky will replace its Travel News service within 12 months

Any more predictions out there? Let’s get them out now before it launches…

Isn’t it about time we started judging DTT and it’s lineup, against ‘normal’ analogue? Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Reading threads and posts, the arguments for and against Pay Tv,transmission standards,etc..etc…

Is it not time we look at DTT not from an ‘anaroks’ view but from an ‘ordinary’ viewer, you know the ones that don’t have digital tv,just the 5 or even just 4 analogue channels.

Pay tv on terrestial was never heard of before Digital tv came along, yet the people moaning about the lack of any Pay services on DTT now, never thought of complaining about the lack of Sky 1 for instance when analogue cable and satellite had it,and tv thru’ the ariel didn’t.

Pay Tv thru’ an ariel didn’t generate enough interest from ‘joe public’ to make it work.

It is time to get terrestrial tv back to the masses not the minority!

At the ende of the day, after analogue switch off,DTT will be ‘normal’ telly, something that is often forgotten about, over and above all the arguments.

Looking at the line up of

BBC 1
BBC 2
BBC 3(soon to be)
BBC 4
BBC News24
BBC Parliament
BBC i Text
Cbeebies
CBBC
ITV 1
ITV 2
ITV News Channel
Channel 4
‘five’
Digital Teletext
Sky News
Sky Travel
Sky Sports News
CNN
Boomerang
Turner Classic Movies
QVC
TV Travel Shop
UK History

Plus with he rumours that channels such as

Eurosport
MTV
The Box
Disney
Sky 1

are all looking for DTT carriage, surely the above list to the average punter in the street looks more attractive than just getting 4 or 5 channels that they currently receive?

The stumbling block is the £99 for the digibox, but if Compass pulls off this £29 box next year who knows!

Plus with DAB still being expensive the addition of digital radio, remember audio leads to the hi-fi don’t cost any more than £5,this may add to the selling point of the platform.

Walking in to stores such as Currys and Comet, the sale is definately on Widescreen TV,the ratio of floor space, the Currys i was in only had three 4:3 sets on sale compared to something like 20 widescreen.

The BBC,ITV,4 and five are all commited to producing widescreen programmes, but you need a digibox to receive them.

Another DTT selling point!

Far from DTT being dead,i think it’s just the beginning.

Thoughts anyone?

What’s in it for AOL-Time Warner owned TBS? Freeview

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

We’ve seen a lot made of the fact that the BBC’s bid has a BSkyB connection but little has been made of the fact that Turner are offering up CNN, Boomerang and TCM – which is just as many as Sky (and IMO a far better selection, though that wouldn’t be hard!).

What are AOL TW going to get out of this and why are they so keen for most of their channels to be free in the UK? How is this going to come across with the cable companies?

Is it time for FTA DTTV, preferably high definition? Freeview

Many people seem to be forgetting that all the TVs and video recorders in bedrooms and kitchens across the country have to be converted to digital before analogue switch off can occur. It’s stated that currently 40% of households in the UK have digital TV (I have Sky), but I think actual digital penetration is probably no better than 10% as few households are prepared to take out additional subscriptions to upgrade each television and recording device owned – some way short of the government’s 90% target for switch off. There are still the 60% of households who don’t have digital at all and many of them are not interested in what’s currently being offered, so maybe the emphasis of digital TV broadcasters has to change from quantity to quality of service to entice these people.

In my opinion, I think the only viable future for DTTV (and the only way the 90% target will be reached) is for an entirely free-to-air one supplying a high quality service, where channel numbers aren’t important but channel quality is; both in terms of programme content and engineering standards.

In the immediate term, I think the government should bring in legislation to limit each multiplex to 4 wide-screen FTA TV channels in order to force broadcasters to raise picture and sound quality up to at least DVD standard. The multiplexes might be arranged in this way:

MULTIPLEX 1 (BBC)

BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Choice (Three), BBC Four

MULTIPLEX 2 (Commercial)

ITV1, CH4, CH5, ITV2

MULTIPLEX 3 (Information)

BBC News 24, BBC Parliament, ITN, BBCi, Digital Teletext

MULITPLEX 4 (Live Events)

BBC Multiscreen

If no additional channels are made available for FTA reception, it may be more profitable for the government to use the remaining multiplexes for mobile telecommunications or reserve them for a future HDTV service, probably using a more advanced compression system, starting 5 or 10 years from now.

As is happening in many other countries (such as USA, Canada, Australia, Japan), I think DTTV should have been reserved for HDTV from the outset to compete with subscription TV on a quality versus quantity basis.

Justin.

It will take a long long time….. Freeview

It will take a long long time to build up customer confidence in the DTT platform. With the demise of ITVD, ITV now have a very damaged brand. Before the name change from OD to ITVD the general public respected the ITV brand knowing that it gave great value with good programming.

Now that the top brass at Granada and Carlton have screwed things up it will take a long time for the British public to trust them again. They certainly would not trust ITV with yet another digital format.

If you are a football fan then it seems that you will miss the grand finale of the football season due to the incompetence of ITVD. It’s probably the most important time of the year and they screw it up like this. This just goes to show what a complete bunch of idiots they really are. It now looks very likely that ITVD will be dismantled with no phoenix rising from the ashes, instead we will have to subscribe to BSkyB to watch any kind of live premier league football next season.

Maybe some advice to anyone who plans to buy this devastated medium. Sit tight for a few months, don’t do anything. DTT is a very damaged product so it would be suicide to re-launch the brand immediately. Learn from the mistakes that ITVD made and give the public what they actually want.

Thanks ITV.
Thanks for nothing…..
