Wired connections to a Wireless Router Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I am expecting a free wireless router that I don’t really need.
Let me explain.
My BB connection is LAN wired into a PC with XP Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and then output to my home network using further LAN cable and some hubs.
Can I connect my home network of LAN cables and hubs to just one of the wired outputs of a VM wireless router?
Reason: modem and first PC/hub are a long way apart – the 2nd PC is a very long way apart from that. I do have LAN cables in place between them all though.

Assuming I can – will the VM installer CD set the router up for both wired and wireless connections? I don’t fancy recovering the current (stable!) working state if it won’t.

Why would I want to do this? So I don’t have to go back down 2 floors to turn on the ICS PC when I’ve forgetten to switch it on!

Wireless Network stoppe working Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Help , I’m confused !! (Which is often not hard)

Last night my wireless network stopped working, I have a Belkin router and it has lost connection with the internet.

Connecting directly with the Cable modem and all is Ok, so I know the issue is not purely with Virgin.
However, speaking to friends in the street 2 other users of Belkin routers on Virgin have also lost use of their wireless networks.

Any ideas?

Cheers for any advice.

Virgin Netgear wireless WGR614V9 – Back to Netgear firmware Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

(Sorry posted in wrong forum can a mod delete this one. Cheers)

Hi there,

I have recently come by with a Virgin Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I was wondering how easy it would be to change the firmware on this back to the Netgear one. I know this is technically VMs property but its mine after 12 months. I dont want to be bogged down with the stupid virginmedia firmware they ship with as I want to convert it into an access point.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Installations question about the wireless n router for 50mbps Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Ok I got this router through the post last week and just tried to install it today. However I couldnt get past the setup screen as it wanted an active connection to the internet so I had to quit. How am I supposed to get an active connection when its not even installed yet? I was following the instructions they suppled on the virgin media letter and using the netgear cd first before the virgin media cd. How do I install it? I cant get any internet connection with it if I just plug it in.

Also I dont plan on using the usb stick they supplied with it. Can I still use it without and have a eternet cable going to pc and one to the cable modem?

Currently I’m using a WGR614 netgear router which works fine but thought I might as well use this newer one instead.

confused about the wireless router they just sent me for 50mbps Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Ok I’m currently using a 54mbps netgear wgr614 v6 wireless router.

After I requested another router for my 50mbps connection another one arrived. It was supposed to be wireless n but I think they sent the wrong one?

It looks identical to my current router. only difference being on the back it says “netgear wgr614 v6 wireless-g router v9 instead of v6 from before.

Should i even bother installing this? Or did they send the wrong one? I’m confused…
Not that I need wireless as I have my current router connected to pc wired and my 360 wired to it. Will it even make any difference with the router they sent?

currently i’m getting between 4000k/sec to 5500k/sec on my current router.

Virgin broadband wireless question Virgin Media Broadband

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Ok, my situation is this. I’ve just given my mum my old laptop but it has no ethernet port.

The only reason I’ve given her the PC is so she can connect to Virgin Broadband, so I need a way to set up the cable connection without ethernet.

My solution is to use my own laptop (with Ethernet port) to set up the connection, then connect my mum’s laptop wirelessly using the wireless router.

However, I don’t live with my mum, so I’m going to be taking my own PC away with me once I’ve done this. Will her wireless connection still work?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Hiya

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have got 20mbit broadband with VM and was recently send a Netgear router however after our XMAS tidy I can’t find the install CD.

Called 151 and they have told me to call CS and ask for a new CD but I was wondering is it possible to set it up manually/download the driver from the net?

Any help would be appreciated.
